Colour, when it is truly understood, does not shout; it builds. At Joy Haus, a Mount Eliza residence reimagined by Studio Shields, designer Ruby Shields rebuilt the home from the ground up, replacing white walls and beige floors with a palette of 15 carefully selected hues. Each one deepens and intensifies as you move through the space.
Featuring Elio Dining Table
In the dining nook, ou Elio Rectangle Dining Table sits confidently within the colour. Set alongside deep banquette seating, its warm, richly grained walnut surface holds its own within the surrounding colour.
Against earthy golden walls, textured upholstery and layered objects, Elio introduces a grounding material presence without taking away from the energy of the room. Timber at its most considered: warm, honest and timeless.
Throughout the home, Shields demonstrates an instinct for materiality, layering warmth, texture and contrast with confidence. Walnut joinery, stone benchtops and a stainless steel splashback catch light against the surrounding tones. Cork floors, travertine, deep plum upholstery and bold red-orange accents build a palette that feels cohesive, allowing each material to own its place.
The result is a home that invites you to look closer. Thoughtfully composed, richly layered and a testament to the remarkable synergy of colour and materiality.
Joy Haus is a reminder that colour is a design tool that rewards conviction. A home that draws you in, holds your attention and leaves you wanting to look a little longer.
