Talk us through a typical day in the life of Jess Hislop.
No two days are ever quite the same, but they all start early — usually with three little girls climbing into bed before the sun’s fully up. Mornings are a mix of breakfast chaos, school drop-off, and coffee before diving into work.
My days are split between creative projects — styling, design concepts, and planning for Rondelie Estate — and the realities of family life. Some days are spent sourcing pieces in Melbourne, visiting showrooms and suppliers, and then coming home to pull it all together for a client. I love that my work is so closely intertwined with our home; one often inspires the other.
Afternoons are for pick-ups, snacks, and a quick garden wander. Evenings are all about dinner, baths, bedtime stories, and approximately one hour of “Mum and Dad TV” before we collapse into bed.
You recently made the move from Melbourne city to the Macedon Ranges. What inspired the shift and how did you go about turning your new house into a true reflection of you?
After years of city living, we reached a point where we were craving space — both physically and mentally. We wanted a new creative project that would become our forever home; a place we could pour our energy, ideas, and family memories into. When we found the property, it instantly felt like the place where our story would continue.
We decided not to make any major changes to the interiors until our larger renovation down the track, so for now it’s been as simple as filling the home with all of our special pieces. We’ve curated an eclectic mix of new and vintage finds, and together they’ve created a space that truly reflects who we are as a family.
There’s a clear sense of personality in your design style. Does the same approach show up in your wardrobe too? How do the two influence one another?
I think living in Melbourne and working in design means a lot of my wardrobe naturally leans into “Melbourne black.” As a busy mum of three, I don’t always have the time to curate my wardrobe the way I would a room, but I still try to bring in small touches of personality — a bright bag, yellow shoes, something that adds a bit of fun.
That said, if it’s a special occasion, I tend to go all out — feathers, sparkles, a contrasting bag. I love to dress up when the opportunity arises, and those moments definitely mirror my approach to interiors: expressive, joyful, and never too serious.

Must-have pieces from our collection?
Gino Console Rosso Francia - obviously as now I own it!
Next on my wish list is the Elio Round Table in Walnut for my office. It has a grounding presence and when you having hundreds of samples surrounding you - I feel the Elio table is a good neutraliser.
